Get To Know Your City Council: Ben Zarlingo

​Councilmember Ben Zarlingo has been a committed public servant in Everett, Washington, representing District 5 since his 2022 election. His district covers the entire Silver Lake neighborhood and parts of the Pinehurst-Beverly Park, Cascade View, and Twin Creeks neighborhoods. ​


Background and Early Life



Originally from western Colorado, Zarlingo was raised on a farm and ranch, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of community. He earned an engineering degree from Colorado State University and worked as a radio announcer before relocating to Everett in the 1980s to join a new division of Hewlett-Packard. After retiring, he established a small technology consulting firm and co-authored a book on testing cellular and mobile phone data networks. ​

Zarlingo's dedication to community service is demonstrated by his extensive volunteer work. Since 1991, he has been an active member of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Association, serving in various leadership roles, including co-chair, since 1995. His volunteer activities include middle school math tutoring, teaching, and coaching robotics teams. He has also engaged in forest restoration projects with Forterra and contributed to the lake monitoring program with Snohomish County Surface Water Management. Currently, he supports fundraising for high school speech and debate clubs. ​


City Council Initiatives and Positions


As a council member, Zarlingo is focused on understanding community priorities and tackling key issues such as public safety, budget sustainability, housing, growth, job opportunities, and recreational resources. He seeks to make Everett a welcoming place where residents can build their desired lives. ​


In December 2023, Zarlingo voted for an ordinance allowing prosecutors to impose a 30-day mandatory minimum jail sentence for repeat offenders of certain crimes, including theft and assault. This decision was part of the council's efforts to reduce recidivism and enhance public safety.


In January 2025, Zarlingo was re-elected (unopposed) as the vice president of the Everett City Council, reflecting his colleagues' confidence in his leadership skills.

Councilmember Zarlingo continues to prioritize community engagement and effective governance. His ongoing efforts focus on addressing the evolving needs of Everett's residents, with an emphasis on safety, economic growth, and quality of life improvements. Through collaboration with fellow council members and active involvement in community initiatives, Zarlingo aims to make a positive impact on the city he has called home for many years.
